The creators of the famous Burnout series are currently hard at work on their latest title Black, which is, surprisingly, a first person shooter. It's basically like Burnout, only instead of cars you've got guns, and instead of tracks you've got corridors and the likes ( hang on a minute - Ed). And guns, again. Lots and lots of guns. Did I mention it had guns (you did - Ed)?
You play as an American Black Op in Eastern Europe, whose task is to go save his buddies, and shoot the living hell out of everyone while you're at it. And by Black Ops, it doesn't mean that you'll be hiding and making stealth kills. You see, the thing about Black is that it strongly focuses on guns, and what you can do with them. In your average FPS, you grab your weapon of choice, you shoot, you kill the bad guys, reload, and you do the whole thing again. In Black, you shoot, you kill bad guys, you destroy everything you see, and you keep shooting. Everything you see can be demolished, either by your pistol, your AK-47 or a grenade, which makes the game bloody gorgeous.
The missions seem to be straight forward. As mentioned before, you shoot your way to the end - but which end? There are multiple ways and paths through your mission that should give some nice replay action, and of course more destroying fun. At the end of each mission, you will be given a score depending on how well you blasted your way through. Head-shots and the likes will make for some bonus points, as well as combos.
As for the graphics, it really makes you ask yourself: why would I want a next-gen console when I've got this? Unfortunately it seems that all the best looking games come out at the end of the console's lifespan, and BLACK is the proof of this. The maps are extremely detailed, and the guns seem almost real. When taking down a building by, say, a rocket launcher, everything will start crumbling down and the screen will fill with smoke, making it hard to see anything at all, which will cause more than once to shoot blindly while trying to take cover - something that will make you feel scared and excited at the same time.
Criterion's aim is to translate the Hollywood experience to consoles, making you play as the good guy with guns that has to shoot bad guys. Several movies and TV series such as Alias and 24 have influenced the game, making it look and feel more like a movie rather than a game.
BLACK will undoubtedly make for a challenging and exciting experience, and I personally cannot wait to see more of this title. Set for an early 2006 release on PS2 and XBox, make sure you don't miss it. |
