Korean man dies after marathon gaming session

Rob Rymond, 13 December 2005

Article summary (if available):
10 days of solid online gaming.

We've reported on many deaths recently, and it comes as no surprise that another gamer has died in South Korea.

The 38-year-old man recently collapsed and died after a marathon gaming session in an Internet Cafe in Incheon, West Seoul. And get this, he played non-stop for 10 days. Presonally, I'd need to rest after any game for even half a day...

We don't have details of which game he did play, but we know the Chinese government are now trying to enforce a restriction against playing online games.

I think you'll be in just as much shock as I am, though at the time he spent solidly playing it comes as no surprise.

I don't understand this...it was an internet cafe...so is itfor 24 hours and no one made him get off...this is either untrue or very cruel. I think all of Asia should have a gaming time limit enforced.

South Korea is a highly advanced society, they class gaming tournaments as a professional sport, with coaches, trophies and everything, they even broadcast them on TV. They take gaming very seriously indeed (my kinda place). It’s a shame people aren’t a little more aware that lack of sleep kills you quicker than lack of food or even lack of water. That’s a fact that will keep you awake at night :p

On a similar note, the chip shop in Solihull (Kings) is owned by Chinese.

Now, some lunchtimes in College, we head there to buy lunch. On Friday I had a cone of chips and was served by one of the blokes.

Friday night we went to the cinema in Solihull, came out around 1am and went to Kings (until 2.45am :-). I stood in the queue of drunken people and guess who served me...

The same bloke from earlier. Me and my friend found it hilarous that he was still working hours later.

The Chinese are very dedicated and hard working, but then again if you have a real passion for something you really want to give it your best shot, spending every ounce of time you have making whatever you do as perfect as you can.

I'm not surprised to hear it (Chinese guy) - he probably has a passion. After all, there are many who say "if you want a good job done, do it yourself".

As for the Korean incident, I'm frustrated at it.. You *need* to sleep, regardless of whatever you are doing - be it working, playing or both.
