Capcom Classics Collection Review

Arron Hanley, 15 December 2005

Article summary (if available):
A compilation of Capcom classics.

Capcom: renowned for their Devil May Cry, Resident Evil and Onimusha series at present; as well as going back to the SNES days with Street Fighter. Before Capcom became a huge developer, Capcom was releasing games for arcaders. Capcom have now released a compilation of their titles from 1984 to 1992. Games on offer range vastly, from beat ‘em ups to platform titles, Capcom Classics Collection has hit the nail on the head with twenty-two perfect arcade titles on a console. The list of games available are as follows (in alphabetical order):

  • 1942 - WWII vertical shooter, taking on the Japanese.
  • 1943 - WWII vertical shooter, taking on the Japanese
  • 1943 Kai - WWII vertical shooter, taking on the Japanese
  • Bionic Commando – Horizontal platformer, swinging and killing are the main objectives.
  • Commando – A marine in charge in this highly popular vertical shooter.
  • EXED Exes – Excess shooters lurking within.
  • Final Fight – Horizontal fighter.
  • Forgotten Worlds – Futuristic horizontal shooter.
  • Ghosts ‘n Goblins – Horizontal platformer.
  • Ghouls ‘n Ghosts – Later version of Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
  • Gun.Smoke – Vertical shooter as a cowboy.
  • Legendary Wings – Mythological vertical shooter.
  • Mercs – Vertical shooter similar to Commando.
  • Pirate Ship Higemaru – Horizontal barrel mover.
  • Section Z – Futuristic horizontal shooter.
  • SonSon – Half platform, half shooter – horizontal.
  • Street Fighter II – Highly popular 2D fighter from Capcom.
  • Street Fighter II: Champion Edition – Highly popular 2D fighter from Capcom.
  • Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting – Highly popular 2D fighter from Capcom.
  • Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts – Updated horizontal platformer.
  • Trojan – Horizontal fighter.
  • Vulgus – Vertical futuristic shooter.

Most noticeable are the three Street Fighter titles, Ghosts’ n Goblins and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. Capcom haven’t made any changes to the games, they’ve simply brought the arcade to your home, with all of the titles representing every aspect of the arcade version: graphics, sound and gameplay. Negative in the games are the glitches which often occur such as the screen going fuzzy, but it brings back the memories from playing arcade machines: “Hey, that happened to me 10 years ago” and so forth.

Trying to review a bunch of twenty-two titles is hard and would be a waste of space to any degree. We’ve listed the titles above and explained the genre. Titles from back, back in the day make welcome appearances and the amount of games on offer for a RRP of £14.99 make this a game to pick up. Those who want to relive the memories, this is an essential purchase for you. Those who want to have fun with twenty-two titles for a bargain price of £14.99 will enjoy their moneys worth… especially as they have infinite continues and don’t have to put 30p in each time they lose their lives.

CCC has shown how far videogames have progressed over the last 20 or so years. It’s an outstanding achievement for the industry and it’s even better when developers go back to their roots to bring you retro titles straight to your current system.
