Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has commented on Microsoft's claims of beginning the HD revolution, which will apparantly only begin when the PlayStation 3 is here.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Harrison commented, "The true definition of HD is the three elements of the HD value chain - the display, the content and the hardware to play back that content, and PlayStation and Sony is the only organisation that has all three bits of the value chain together".
Onto Xbox 360, and he further stated, "As you well know, the Xbox 360 doesn't play high definition movies and doesn't have true HD functionality - PlayStation 3 is the only format that has 1080-progressive, which is the true definition of HD, so it's really premature to be talking about the HD era. The HD era really only starts when we are on the market."
The PlayStation 3 will support 1080p resolution, which is technically where HD begins. However, the high resolution may cause a drop in frame rate for many of the games that support it. The PS3 will also support Blu-Ray, Sony's propriety disc format, which will allow for the playing of HD movies, something the Xbox 360 does not currently support.
Continuing, he mentioned that "high definition as far as the consumer is concerned means high definition movies, which means Blu-Ray disc, and that is the reason that people will buy high definition displays coupled with a player that is capable of playing movies and games - which is obviously PlayStation 3".
The Xbox 360 may have got an early start, but is it enough to defend itself against the PlayStation 3? We'll soon find out, as it is only a matter of months until the release. |

Hopefully it has as good of display as they say. I wasnt blown away by the 360's picture even with my HDTV. It's great don't get me wrong, but i'm hoping theres something better than the 360.
Also, if the revolution isn't high def, i should get a smaller TV

It looks great, going by the screenshots that were released for it, but then again, the PS1/2 was so exaggerated that there isn't really a lot of point listening to Sony or looking at the screenshots until the console is here.

See, this sort of arrogance really gets my back up. Until they actually deliver something (and i'm talking in game videos, not prerendered rubbish), then they have no right to criticise.
Why do they not seem to realise that all the average gamer wants is some fantastic games, the average consumer doesn't even *have* a HDTV, let alone a 1080p £15k one.

@ chris,
wasn't hideo Kojima controlling Snake at one point while showing off MGS4?
Or am I remembering falsely? ( I honestly can't remember )
anywho, that really is a bit arrogant...and ms started the so called "HD era" even though 360 can't play hd movies, and doesn't have the best HD output.
It is true that a lot of consumers consider a high definition device one that plays HD movies...at least thats what I think...

While I think what Sony said is a litte arrogant it is still true at the same time. My biggest complaint with the 360 is the lack of HD-DVDs
